Asia-Plus (Russian edition), 19 February 2024. The article reports statistics on suicides and suicide attempts in Tajikistan for 2023. According to figures provided to Asia-Plus by the Committee on Women’s and Family Affairs under the government (Комитет по делам женщин и семьи при правительстве), based on data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (МВД), 339 cases of suicide and 74 attempted suicides were registered in 2023. The article reports 215 cases among men (212 in 2022) and 198 among women (203 in 2022). Suicides among minors rose by 5 cases to 47. Regionally, the article reports Sughd region (Согдийская область) leading with 172 cases (down 6 from 178 in 2022); Khatlon region (Хатлонская область) 117 cases (down 17); districts of republican subordination 67 cases (up 13); GBAO 28 cases (up 5); and the capital 22 cases (up 4). The article states that the main cited reasons remain mental illness, difficult financial conditions and family conflicts. Cases linked to mental illness fell from 102 to 87, while those linked to financial hardship and family conflicts rose from 8 to 14. 66 cases were listed as “other,” down from 106. 211 cases were recorded as having unknown causes, up 34 from 2022. On methods, the article reports 326 cases of self-hanging (худовези), 27 drownings, 21 poisonings, 14 involving firearms and knives, 10 self-immolations, and 15 by other methods. It closes by saying the data indicate the need for more effective preventive measures, including attention to social and economic causes and provision of psychological support.
