Wikipedia: Social Democratic Party of Tajikistan

Political persecutionCivil society

English summary

The report states that the Social Democratic Party of Tajikistan (SDPT; Tajik: Ҳизби сотсиал-демократии Тоҷикистон) is a centre-left political party registered on 20 December 2002 and led by Rahmatullo Zoirov until his death on 18 May 2024. According to the report, the party is opposed to the authoritarian government led by the People’s Democratic Party of Tajikistan and has been recognised as the only Tajik party to explicitly oppose President Emomali Rahmon. The report describes the party’s ideology as social democracy, progressivism, secularism and civic nationalism, and notes its international affiliation with the Progressive Alliance. Tracing its origins, the report states that the party’s history dates back to 18 March 1998, when future SDPT members established Tajikistan’s Party of Justice and Progress; that predecessor was registered on 9 February 1999 but suspended on 2 September 1999, which prevented it from taking part in the Tajik presidential election, and the party was eventually registered under its current name on 20 December 2002. The report adds that results from the 27 February and 13 March 2005 legislative elections are not publicly available, that the SDPT boycotted both the 2006 and 2013 presidential elections, and that in the 2020 parliamentary election it received 0.3 percent of the vote and won no seats.
